This past summer, Sheridan offered all of our core Art Fundamentals courses, including: 2D Design, 3D Design, Drawing Systems, Intro to Painting, drawing, and a general elective.
Peter Palermo at one point asked for a show of hands of how many Art Fundamentals summer students will be joining more advanced programs in September, like Visual and Creative Arts, and it seems to me that as many as 50-60% of students were indeed using the Art Fundamentals program as a stepping stone into 3- and 4-year arts programs.
We wish them all the very best of luck!

Art Fundamentals Students Launch Live Mural
For two weeks, Art Fundamentals students were literally counting down the days until the launch of a live mural, initiated by faculty Les Sasaki, co-ordinator Peter Palermo and the Art Fundamentals Events Committee. On October 9th, a ribbon covering the 12′ x 8′ ft white plywood surface was cut, and students began to apply their creativity to the “Live Mural” space.
Students were given the following instructions:
The mural is alive, meant to be painted over and over again with the free-flowing creativity of Sheridan students. The idea came from a live mural maintained by Bachelor of Illustration students in their wing.
The mural launch also served as a fundraiser for the Art Fundamentals program, as they managed to sell $41.21 worth of popcorn during the launch. (The next Art Fundamentals Fundraiser will be a comic book sale taking place October 29th, 30th and 31st).
Like a live thing, the fate of this mural is not predetermined. It may continue to be painted over, gaining layers throughout the year, before eventually being either displayed or stripped and begun anew. All Art Fundamentals students, faculty and staff are welcome to contribute their own creativity to the mural. You can find it in “The Pit,” right outside A110, Trafalgar campus.

Comic Book Sale – Fundraiser for Art Fundamentals Program
This week we are bringing back comic books at Sheridan College!
Art Fundamentals students will be selling comic books in the B-wing of Trafalgar campus on Tuesday October 29th and Wednesday October 30th, 11am to 3pm.
Comic books are selling for $0.50 for one or three for $1.00.
All proceeds go toward the Art Fundamentals Awards Fund.

Best Wishes in Your Retirement Andrew Bodor
Andrew has painted his place into many hearts at Sheridan for over 15 years, from students who will remember his inspirational ‘Master to apprentice’ critiques, to the hearts of his colleagues, we who are charmed by Andrew’s symphonic hand gesturing, eyebrow remonstrating and stomach rumbling laughter, — effortlessly turning a working relationship into a friendship. And his gregariousness, his irreverence, his respect will be sorely missed from all those committees that are made worthwhile mostly by the company they provide. There will certainly be a lack on LAC – without Andrew’s knack for aphoristic criticism.
Damn where are we going to find another mad Hungarian artist? Every Faculty should have at least one. Someone, who in good humour can cut a clear thinking swath through the bluster filled babble of institutional conventions, all the while referencing learning and art and metaphor and reality and beauty. Where are we going to find another philosopher in wolf’s clothing – one with the guts to exhibit himself in our public gallery for everyone to see him naked and unabashed – with life-size well hung self-portraits, or is that well hanged self-portraits, – that exhibition was Andrew. How rare is the man who shows no fear of public opinion yet deeply cares for each individual. That’s our friend and colleague Andrew Bodor, larger than life on the outside, but still ingenuous as a child amazed by the wonders of existence and life and self-awareness.
And so we are left with only one recourse – to say thank you Andrew – for blessing Sheridan with your talents and dedication. You have made a colourful and deep impression. May the blessings of earth and promises of heaven continue to flow through your life wherever turns your artist’s gaze and wherever beats your enormous heart.

The ‘Living wall’ – student mural in the pit
Last October, Art Fundamentals students officially cut the ribbon during the grand opening for the ‘living wall.’ If it hasn’t already caught your eye, it’s a wall-size canvas that is open to any medium, any topic/imagery and is always refreshed with new creativity (on a weekly or even daily basis).
Art Fundamentals program coordinator Peter Palermo explains: “This wall is a form of communication. It is monitored by the students who have the opportunity to collaborate with each other and express creativity and sometimes frustration!” Art Fundamentals is a one-year foundation program, that helps students to build portfolios. Many continue at Sheridan in other FAAD programs. It provides curriculum in illustration, animation, visual effects, textile design and more. This collaborative mural project helps build community and confidence among students.

Art Fundamentals 2015 Graduate show “Imagicon”
Sheridan’s Art Fundamentals program held their Year End Awards show last night at the Marquee Student Union Pub. Included in the festivities was a surprise for program coordinator Peter Palermo, as students showed up to the event with masks of Peter’s face.
The awards show also featured a costume party, live music and saw over 250 of people in attendance.
There were 49 student awards handed out during the evening. Congratulations to all who participated in the event and best of luck heading into next year’s fall term.
New Acquisitions to the Sheridan Permanent Art Collection
The Faculty of Animation, Arts and Design is delighted to announce a series of new art acquisitions that are intended to build our growing permanent art collection. Many acquisitions were made as part of our new program of Dean’s Student Art Awards, selected from our students’ graduating art exhibits.
The Sheridan permanent art collection is a curated selection of artwork by Sheridan alumni, students, faculty and emeritus faculty. As the Faculty for the visual arts, Animation, Arts & Design has taken the lead on this project for obvious reasons. But increasingly, all departments across Sheridan are taking an active interest in participating in this process. With Sheridan’s exciting initiative to create a new role of Curator of Creative Campus Galleries, we are extremely well positioned to continue building the collection. It is intended to foster and showcase Sheridan’s creative legacy while generating inspiration and dialogue. Be on the look- out for these works on campus!

Ontario Educators in Art and Design Foundation meet in Niagara
The OEADF (Ontario Educators in Art and Design Foundation) is an organization of teachers and educators in the foundation programs from collages all over the province. Based off of the FATE (Foundations in Art: Theory and Education) association in the United States, each year the OEADF meets at a different collage to share in the goal of making the foundational experience in art a solid springboard for a successful academic and professional life. This year, Peter Palermo, Coordinator for Sheridan’s Art Fundamentals program led the group as acting chair. A number of topics discussed this year at Niagara-on-the-lake College including strategies for engaging students, services for students with learning disabilities/ medical challenges, and organizational structure. The gathering also consisted of a tour of the Niagara region’s wineries followed by a tasting.

Art Fundamentals Faculty Todd Barsanti Merges Design and Sustainability at ClimaCon 2016
Congratulations to Professor Todd Barsanti for exhibiting his recent work at the 2016 ClimaCon Conference in Ottawa. A graduate of the Graphic Design program at Sheridan College, Todd is an award-winning designer with over 20 years of industry experience. Recognizing a lack of understanding of sustainability issues within both the graphic design industry and academia, in 2009, Todd undertook a Master’s degree in Environmental Studies at York University to continue researching how to approach design with an environmental mindset. Todd currently teaches in Sheridan’s Art Fundamentals program and is a Climate Leader with The Climate Reality Leadership Project Canada.
This past May, Todd undertook a design residency with DesignInquiry at the Poor Farm on Vinalhaven Island, Maine. Three posters were produced during this residency in association with the Climate Reality Project Canada and then exhibited at the 2016 ClimaCon Conference.
Todd approached this design challenge through a process which uses non-traditional materials to communicate messages of sustainability. Each poster combines materials that present a strong juxtaposition between a product and the unsustainable modes of production behind it to expose processes that are not always visible.
Because our Art Fundamentals students are trying to build portfolios for multiple programs, we really try to encourage them to work with multiple medias when completing projects in 2D Design. As a means for practicing what I preach, I wanted to create a series of posters that use non-traditional materials and document the process of their creation. I would also consider myself an environmental activist and so the content of the posters was relatively easy to devise….I wanted to get my hands dirty, to use materials that made the messages implicit, and to choose mediums that would illustrate the dichotomies of our consumptive patterns.
